What is Metaverse? How is it used in education?

I think many people have heard of the word metaverse. First of all, what is the Metaverse?"A three-dimensional virtual space on the Internet where people can carry out various activities"That's a simple definition.

Users can use their avatars (themselves in the Metaverse) in the virtual space to "communicate and conduct economic activities with other users" just like in the real world. Since the world's first Metaverse space was announced in 2003, this virtual space has become even more recognized as Meta (Facebook) showed its focus on the Metaverse business in 2021. Why is it attracting so much attention? That's not all.

In parallel with the entry of big tech and advances in technology, the demand for digital communication has increased due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and the resistance people had to virtual spaces has begun to fade. So, what role can the metaverse play in education? Among the ``immediate regulatory reform implementation items'' announced by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in December 3, ``Utilize the metaverse through diversification of learning formats and technological innovation that contributes to the realization of education tailored to individual students. It is also assumed that classes that go beyond the traditional classification of online classes and face-to-face classes will be used, such as classes taught online and in person, and that the Metaverse will enter education in the future, bringing about changes in traditional class formats. Possibilities are suggested. Additionally, under the GIGA School Initiative, an ICT educational environment has been created at schools, further expanding the possibilities for utilizing the Metaverse.

Free education is possible without the constraints of traditional classrooms, such as visual understanding through 3D content and experiments in a virtual reality world that can be redone without risk.
