An online international exchange event titled "World Tour," sponsored by the Tokushima Prefectural Board of Education, was featured in the Yomiuri Shimbun.
The training, which took place on September 9th at Tokugin Tomoni Plaza in Tokushima City, allowed high school students from Tokushima Prefecture to interact and talk with students from Indonesia, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, and also learned about the educational situation in each country from teachers from India and Ghana.
Prefectural Board of Education program to cultivate international perspective
In this program, participants communicated in English with people of the same generation from overseas, learned about each other's cultures, and learned about the current state of education in each country through interactions with people with diverse perspectives, including teachers and students.

·Self-introduction
・Cultural exchange “language exchange”
·discussion
·presentation
After getting to know each other through self-introductions and language exchanges, the students engaged in a discussion in English. Topics discussed included, "I wish we had a class like this!" and "If the current school life changed to online classes, would you be in favor?" There are no right answers to these questions. This allows each person to speak freely. By exchanging opinions, they were able to encounter different opinions and values that arise from differences in culture and living environment.
The presentation was on the theme of "The Ideal High School/Learning Place." The students gave their presentations in English, reflecting on what they had learned and discussed through lectures by overseas teachers and discussions with overseas students. There was always a learning assistant (a university student interning at With The World) on hand to support them with English composition and time management, so even students who were not good at English were able to give their presentations with confidence.
The following comments were received from the students who participated:
"I was interested in the overseas educational methods that emphasize English conversation, such as having an 'English Day' at school and prohibiting the use of libraries and other facilities that do not speak English. I would like to improve my English skills through this kind of interaction and work overseas in the future."
"It was fun to talk to kids from different countries. I want to work hard so I can speak more."
Finally
Living in Japan, there are few opportunities to use English on a daily basis. However, by using English to communicate with students from overseas, you can realize the importance of English and that there are new worlds out there that you don't know about, such as "Oh, English is interesting" and "I didn't know people from overseas think like this." Online international exchange allows you to deepen your interactions with students from countries you rarely have the opportunity to visit, and you can gain a global perspective and realize that what you took for granted until now was not so obvious. In today's world, where internationalization is progressing and the environment is evolving every day, online international exchange is very valuable in cultivating global talent.
"I'm interested in overseas, but I'm worried because I can't speak English." "I want to talk to people from all over the world!"
