Problem-Based Learning (PBL) encourages children's independence.
The next event will be held on November 11st.

This time, I participated in "The 6th World Teachers Conference Ideal Education-Current Status and Future Prospects of Problem-Based Learning (PBL)" (sponsored by With The World Co., Ltd.), so I will report on the contents. To do.

First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to With The World for kindly agreeing to publish the report article.

The “World Teacher Conference” is an online program that was started with the idea of “creating a place where teachers from all over the world can exchange current situations and ideas and think about the future of education.”A total of 15 participants from 45 countries including Japan participated in a variety of subjects such as accounting, chemistry/science, biology, English, geography, French, mathematics, history, physics, social sciences, and information technology. Incumbent teachers. Focusing on the "current state and future prospects of problem-based learning (PBL)," an online exchange of opinions was held on the importance of problem-based learning in schools.

It is important to draw out the curiosity of the students and encourage them to think independently.
In Session 1, we will discuss why “problem-based learning (PBL),” an educational method in which students acquire and acquire knowledge through the experience of discovering and solving problems on their own, is important or necessary. It was discussed whether

Within one group (Poland, Pakistan, India, Japan, etc.) the following opinion emerged:

Teacher A (India): I think PBL will help students to know the current situation people are having.Depending on the student, there are children who neglect the problem as it is, and there are children who find solutions by themselves. But at least at a very rudimentary level they can think about how they, as individuals, can contribute to the task.Because when they talk about Indian democracy, they cannot change society itself. On the other hand, in their rudimentary personal positions, they can definitely change.

Teacher B (Pakistan): PBL is used in the early stages of learning. In PBL, students research, think, and arrive at answers on their own.I think this series of thoughts can be applied to their daily lives.
Teacher C (Japan): PBL is very effective in encouraging students to exercise their independence. In addition, I think that you will be able to develop the ability to apply what you have actually worked on to other problems that occur in your daily life.
Although there are various nationalities and subjects taught, it is important that PBL helps students think and learn in the early stages, and that it is important for students to be able to think independently. I was of the opinion thatIt was also very interesting that the students shared the same opinion that PBL can be applied to their own daily lives.

After the discussion in each group, opinions were shared as a whole.Below are some of the opinions expressed.

  • ・PBL has many advantages.Through PBL, students can acquire problem-solving skills and real-life skills, and grow as human beings both mentally and academically. In addition, you will be able to have a self-awareness, and you will be able to learn about teaching materials such as awareness of collaboration and sustainability.
  • ・I think that PBL will lead to the improvement of students' curiosity. You can find answers according to your own curiosity, and you can cultivate your curiosity by listening to various people's opinions and asking questions.
  • ・PBL is very effective for students themselves to search for answers. They can also develop their communication skills. Both deepening understanding and critical thinking can be obtained through PBL.The most important thing is to work together as a group, not just technically. It is wonderful that the lessons are developed independently by the students, rather than by the teacher.
