Indonesian high school students always listened to us carefully and translated ideas into action. I learned a lot from their activeness and energy. There were multiple times that our plan did not work out well, but discussing every time with our team members guided us to good solutions.

“Checked each other’s English in our discussions”

In the beginning, I was not sure how we could work on the same social issue and figure out a solution together because we were from different countries. Even among the Japanese, we sometimes had disagreements, so I was worried if I could have good discussions with the Indonesian students who spoke a different language. In our discussions, because both of us were not native-English speakers, we checked each other’s English. I think that helped us a lot. Of course, we had different cultures, customs, and values, and they were very new to me, but they gave me new learning. Also, that was a good experience for me to realize the importance of knowing more about and telling others about Japan as being the Japanese.
